fretShapes is a scale visualization tool for guitarists.
It's also a computer instrument that you can play.
Check the keyboard colors below for tips:

Make music with your computer keyboard! These keys trigger
notes on the fretboard (mousing over the fretboard works as
well). The notes on the fretboard are color coded by octave.

The '9' key is a toggle switch which shows and hides the current
scale. The '0' key toggles the visibiltiy of the scale shapes. To
experience the shapes in their purest form, leave the shapes 'on'
while hiding the frets, strings and notes.

The '-' key and the '=' key toggle the visibility of the frets and the
strings. Want a challenge? With the strings and the frets off,
try to visualize the frets beneath the shapes as you play!

The left and right arrow keys transpose the key, and the up and
down arrow keys scroll to the next (or previous) scale. As you
play, use the arrow keys to change the key and scale on the fly!

The spacebar toggles the pedal tone (a repeating tonic note on
the low E sting) on and off. It's highly reccomended to leave this
button 'on' while playing so that the tonal center of the scale can
be extablished and the 'color' of the scale can be heard.
